Lessons and courses work well at first. But in any given course, you'll blaze through some things and get stuck on others for months. The course doesn't know that. It just moves on.
So you end up noodling, replaying what you already know, or circling back to exercises that don't address what you actually need to work on.
Motif gives you a place to build a plan around your specific gaps, without hacking together a Google Sheet you'll never open.
Practise the way you've always meant to
Your goals, your routine
Create a routine around exactly what you want to work on, not a generic list of exercises. Pick from default exercises or create your own — techniques, scales, rhythm or songs.
Pick up and play
You don't have to think about what to practise when you pick up the guitar. Open your routine, set the metronome, and log it in Motif — all in one tab.
Simple enough to stick to
No gamification, no noise. Just a lightweight place to show up, practise, and build a record of everything you're working on.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, Motif is free to use. No subscription, no ads.
No. Motif doesn't tell you what to practise or how to learn guitar. It works best for guitarists who already know what they want to work on. This could be specific exercises and routines you've identified for yourself from your in-person or virtual guitar lessons, YouTube rabbit holes, or just years of practice.
Yes, there's a metronome built into the app. Set your BPM, practise, and your tempo and time get logged automatically as part of the session.
There's no mobile app. Motif works in your browser on any device, though it's best experienced on a larger screen.
No. Motif tracks what you practise and for how long. How you measure your progress as a guitarist is up to you.
Motif is free to use, and I intend to keep it that way. I built it to solve a need I had myself, and it does that without any ongoing costs that would require charging for it.
Yes. I use Motif most days, so I'm motivated to keep it working well. You can find out the latest features and fixes on our What's new page.
